"AS IF!"

Ephesians 6

Paul ends this letter with a "bang" as he lays out practical instruction for the natural world, while reminding us that our real battle is happening on a supernatural level.  He tells us that, "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." He calls us into spiritual warfare in an unseen realm and, at the very same time, reminds us that we need to obey orparents, treat others with honor and not exasperate our kids.

In the middle of this chapter is a single statement that blows my mind everytime I read it.

(6:7-8) Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.

What "blows my mind" about this promise is it's scope.  The scriture promises that "whatever" we do "as if you were serving the Lord" will receive an eternal reward from Jesus Himself. This statement raises the value of everyone's activity!

  • The sofware developer who writes codes "as if" he was doing it for Jesus...
  • The stay-at-home mom who serves her family "as if" she were doing it for Jesus...
  • The mamger who
  • The coach, the police officer, the baby sitter, the student, the teacher, the manager, the insurance agent, the grabage man, the nurse, the folks at the wag-a-bag (We love you guys!), the cook, the salesman, and on and on and on...

"Whatever" you have done "AS IF" you were serving Him, will recieve His recognition on "That day."

Everything matters - Everyone matters - Nothing is wasted!
