A Newer Better Covenant | Hebrews 8

HEBREWS 8

“Your love never ending,

Your grace never failing.

Redemption is calling us home.”

When we sing that song, I am reminded of the contrast between the Old Covenant and the New. How we could never be perfect, we were corrupt and foolish, but in his love God sent his son to be perfection and to be sacrificed so that we could be forgiven, know God, enjoy God, and thankfully and joyfully worship him forever.

Hebrews 8 tell us that Jesus is the eternal High Priest, ministering from heaven the better promises of the new covenant. In contrast, the old covenant was not wrong. The old covenant was ineffective because it could not bring people to perfection. God’s purpose for the Old Covenant was to teach people of moral law, and to make them aware of their sinfulness and to ultimately point to the promise of salvation that is only fulfilled in Christ.

As we read, the new covenant was put in to place because Israel couldn’t hack it. They didn’t add up. They couldn’t keep the law.

for they did not continue in my covenant” (v9)

Now the new covenant brings sweet promises for us “can’t hack it”, law breaking believers.

“I will put my laws into their minds,

and write them on their hearts,

and I will be their God,

and they shall be my people…

…for I will be merciful toward their iniquities,

and I will remember their sins no more.” (v10-12)

When I read this, I feel at peace, and I am driven to thankfulness! When I hear what Jesus did for me, and the promises this New Covenant brings me, it makes me want to follow him even more.

Prayer

God I am so thankful that you sent your son as a sacrifice for my sins. You are merciful and I thank you for that. Help my heart to be softened to the simple but life changing truths of the gospel every single day. Help me to live today looking through the lens of the gospel.

From Galatians 3: For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.
But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

Praise Hod for His faithful solution to our law-breaking!
