God Undefeatable | Matthew 14

Matthew 14

Matthew 14 records two famous miracles of Jesus: The feeding of the five thousand, and walking on water. One displaying his provision, and the other his incredible and overwhelming power as God.

Jesus Feeds The Five Thousand

In verses 13-21 Jesus is actually trying to get away, to retreat, meditate, and spend time in prayer, but in his compassion he stays, as the Great Shepherd, continuing to meet their needs.

Matthew Henry says:

“The provision Christ makes for those who are his is not bare and scanty, but rich and plentiful; an overflowing fullness.”

Our Lord and Savior provides, and it’s more than we could ever imagine! He cares for us, He intercedes on our behalf, He leads us through troubled times, and He builds us up. Jesus is the new and better Moses, who supplies the needs of his people.

Jesus Walks on the Water

In this section Jesus is alone spending his night in prayer with his Heavenly Father, while the disciples are far away from land on a boat. The disciples are faced with a storm while on the water and the ESV Study Bible says they had probably been battling the storm for over 9 hours before Jesus appeared walking on the water! By walking on the water in the middle of this crazy storm Jesus not only demonstrated that he is Lord over all creation but that there is no need to be afraid. He shatters doubt and worry. The disciples respond in worship.

Conclusion

Jesus provides, lovingly and sacrificially. Our Lord is strong, and all-powerful. We should more regularly respond to Gods amazing power and provision in worship instead of turning in on ourselves in selfish and glory stealing worry.

Respond in Worship!
