Hot Button Issues

1 Corinthians 6

When we read chapters like chapter 6 it should be clear to us that History is cyclical and that there is nothing new under the sun. Paul addressed some of the hot button issues facing our modern society two thousand years ago and if Paul owned a Chick-Fil-A, or had an HGTV show lets just say, he might get some negative press.

But what is he getting at? What good is a list like that? I admit that I sometimes cringe in reaction to any Christian who boldly calls sin for what it is, and when I do that, I do a disservice to anyone currently drowning in that sin. Paul isn’t listing off these sins to say, “Not even God himself can save these sinners”, but to say that the “some of you” who were once lost are now “washed… sanctified… justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God”(v9-11). These people are now in the kingdom because the turned from their sin and rested in Christ!

As Christians we must remember that it was not our good that attracted God to us to save us. Our good works were not the groundwork for God declaring us righteous. Now Christians should do good but our goodness follows and proves the faith by which we are justified.

Today lets us remember our own testimonies, thank God for all he has done in our lives, and look for opportunities to encourage the work of God in other peoples lives in hopes that we as a church might see more and more people come through our doors as a result of turning from their sin and resting in Christ.
