One Purpose! One Goal! All In!

through the new testament acts

Acts 6

As the gospel spread throughout Jerusalem, more and more people believed and committed themselves to the cause of Christ. In Jerusalem, like in most cities, there was a diverse group of people, and believers themselves grew more and more diverse as well. Hebraic Jew, Grecian Jew (dispersed Jews living outside Palestine. Their primary language was Greek), Samaritan, Ethiopian, and Gentiles all woven together as the Body of Christ. Praise God!

The Jewish converts who were responsible for feeding the needy were all Hebrew-speaking Jews, and because of their unfamiliarity with other cultures unintentionally overlooked the “Hellenists” widows.

The disciples immediately delegated the task of overseeing the needs of the Hellenist’s widows to seven men. The body of believers then commissioned their ministry by praying and laying their hands on them. The church in its restored unity continues to grow.

The book of Acts gives us a clear picture of what the living breathing body of Christ looks like. What it looks like to live on mission as a true believer. Not everyone is doing the exact same task, but they are all focused on the same goal… spreading the life changing reality of Jesus Christ

These people’s lives are about the gospel. They are living out their response to the reality and the weight of the gospel. All types of people, from different backgrounds, with different educations, united for one purpose.

Did they leave out a section? No!

But where are all the Christians who aren’t really committed to the cause and just show up on Sundays to sing…?

…Hard to find them isn’t it?

What does it say happened as a result of all this?

“And the word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith” Acts 6:7

Wow, I want to be a part of something like that.

Our community and church body are bursting at the seams with opportunities for service. Diligently seek the out. Let’s be all in! Let’s be about the Gospel!

PRAYER

Lord we ask that you would make us about your work. Help us love the loveless, and tell others about the spirit living in us. Send us to bring living water to the thirsty, so our life counts for something greater than ourselves. You are worthy, and you are mighty. We love you and need you desperately.

Amen.

We all should be about doing what we can to help our fellow man. In doing this, we show that we understand what Jesus was about.

What an awesome view of what the church could be / should be. I'm with you in yearning to be part of a community like that!
