John 11

Today we are thrilled to have our Latino Minstry Pastor, Bernardo Garcia offer his great insight into John 11 in both English & Spanish.

El mensaje del pasaje de la resurrección de Lázaro me trae una alegría y gozo mayor. Me da esperanza en varias áreas de mi vida. En primer lugar me permite entender que Dios le da un lugar muy especial a la Amistad. El hecho que Juan describa de manera detallada y considerada la profunda amistad existente entre Jesús y la familia de Lázaro me hace pensar en que el regalo de la amistad en la humanidad nos hace más cercanos a Dios. Me hace ver la realidad que somos hechos a su imagen y semejanza. Nadie puede escoger a su familia, su raza, su lugar de nacimiento. Pero con toda certeza podemos escoger libremente a nuestras amistades. Los amigos son como ángeles enviados por Dios para ayudarnos a vivir en este transito por la tierra. La amistad viene de Dios a regresa a Dios al honrar a nuestros amigos. Existen lazos filiales entre los animales pero solo en ocasiones excepcionales podemos ver algún tipo de amistad entre ellos. No es así entre los humanos. La necesidad imperante de compartir sentimientos, luchas, alegrías es algún estrictamente humano. Si vemos la solidaridad y el trabajar juntos en épocas difíciles o en situaciones de crisis o de profunda alegría comunitaria, entendemos mejor lo que es el tesoro de la amistad.

Otro aspecto de igual importancia es la certeza de la Fe. Jesús sabia que su amigo había muerto, lo cual le daba una oportunidad de dar gloria a Dios al poder resucitarlo. El sabia que si El hubiera estado allí Lázaro estaría aun con vida. Pero Jesús tenia que superar dos grandes obstáculos. En primer lugar, la persecución que los Judíos le tenían a El y a sus discípulos y la propia duda que sus discípulos tenían. Sin embargo su fe en el poder de Dios y en su gracia y favor fue mayor y le permitió emprender el viaje a Betania sin importarle que fuera a ser arrestado por ellos.

Otro aspecto primordial en este milagro es la Solidaridad que Jesús mostro sobre esta familia. En unos de los versos mas cortos de la Biblia lo dice: Jesús lloro. El tiempo que El paso con esta familia en alegrías y en tristezas me hace apreciar aun más la humanidad de nuestro Salvador. El saber que así como nosotros nos dolemos al ver las injusticias que el hombre comete contra el hombre y de la manera tan indigna, ruin y despiadada como se maneja la humanidad, de esa misma manera y con la misma esencia sufrió Jesús al entender el sufrimiento y el luto de Marta y María. Me da esperanza el saber que Jesús sintió, sufrió, y padeció al igual que cada uno de nosotros hemos sentido, sufrido, y padecido me hace verlo mas cerca de mi, a mi debilidad, a mi fragilidad y a mi temporalidad.

El poder de Dios se manifestó grandemente en el último milagro de Jesús. Esta fué la gota que derramó el vaso de la paciencia de los Judíos con respecto a Jesús. Jesús, ese carpintero venido a más, rabino sin abolengo que retó la institución religiosa perfectamente establecida no podría seguir con ese ministerio tan revolucionario. A los ojos de los Fariseos, Jesús no tiene cabida en su mundo perfectamente arreglado. Eso se debe terminar. Pero Dios tiene otra demostración de poder y que es el anticipo de la propia milagrosa resucitación de Cristo. El poder de Dios no tiene límites así como su propia esencia es eterna y majestuosa. Les invito a que pongamos en nuestra vida los valores y las enseñanzas presentadas aquí para lograr tres cosas: Apreciar el dulce bálsamo de la amistad, valorar el mensaje transformador de Cristo y ser vivaces portadores de su evangelio y aprender fundamentalmente a no detenernos en los obstáculos o en las duras pruebas, sino prevalecer en la fe, en la oración y en la disposición de servicio al cuerpo de Cristo.

English:

The message presented on the Bible about the resurrection of Lazarus brings me joy and makes me smile. It gives me hope in several areas of my life. First of all, it allows me to understand the special place God gives in Friendship. The fact that John describes so vividly and detailed the profound friendship between Jesus and Lazarus’ family makes me think about how the precious gift that God gave us through friendship, in realty, make us closer to God. It makes me feel the unquestionable reality that we were made to His image and His likeness. Surely, no one can choose his/her family, race, or birthplace. But certainly we can choose our dearest friends. They are like angels that God sends to alleviate our tribulations in walking this earth. Friendship is a God given gift and it gives back to Him by honouring our friends. There are family ties among animals but just in a few times you could see any kind of friendship among them. It is not the case in the human kind. The deep need to share feelings, struggles, and happiness is something humanly unique. Let’s just take a look at the solidarity in tough times and crisis and the shared happiness in times of joy and common success. We can better see the great treasury of friendship. Yet another thing we can find in John 11 is the Assurance of the faith. Jesus knew that His friend has died, serving a golden opportunity to give glory to God by getting resurrected. He knew that had if He had been there Lazarus would have still been alive. But He had to overcome two major obstacles: the prosecution that the Jews had over Him and His followers and yet their same doubtlessness. But His faith was so strong that He could care less about being arrested and prosecuted by the Jews and started His journey to Bethany. One of the most preeminent aspects of this miracle is the Solidarity shown by Jesus towards this family. In one of the shortest verses in the Bible, it says: Jesus wept. The time Jesus devoted to this family in moments of joy and also in moments of sadness, makes me appreciate further the humanity aspect of our Saviour. To understand that the same way that we feel overwhelmed by the unjust ways of humanity and the unworthy, vile and ruthless ways of man against man, the same way that Jesus understood and felt the pain and mourning of Martha and Mary. It gives me hope to understand & know that Jesus felt, suffered and endured the same way that we have felt, suffered and endured. It makes me see Him closer to me, to my weakness, fragility and temporality. The Power of God was quite evident in this last miracle of Jesus. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back for those against Jesus. He was merely a carpenter, a non-orthodox rabbi that was challenging their well-established position. They felt this could not exist anymore; His revolutionary approach could not be tolerated. He was a menace to their perfectly established scheme. But God had yet another manifestation of His Power and Glory in what is the preamble and anticipation of the resurrection of Christ Himself; the unlimited Power of God, is His essence. It is the same as His Eternity and Majesty. I exhort to you to put to work the values and teachings to achieve three major goals: 1) To appreciate the sweet balsam of friendship 2) To value the transformational message of Christ 3) To become vivacious ambassadors of His Gospel In other words, we must learn to overcome the obstacles and tribulations to prevail in the Faith, in Praying and in Service to the Body of Christ.
